    The fantastic 70mm EDF Avanti here! Avanti is a mutual-developed airplane made by FMS team from China and Sebart Team from Italy. The original design and authorization are from Sebart, with the additional FMS advanced production concept, it is finally being a promised finest work.

    How should we improve a very successful design even further ? - Well, we at CARF-Models asked ourselves that question very often – especially when the topic is aerobatics. Our TOC-proven Extra 330S already got many input from Pilots like Jason Shulman, but when he told us about the advantages of the Extra 260, we started listening immediatly. And not only to him. Also Frazer Briggs is known as a big 260 fan and flew his own designed 260 up to the podium at the Tucson Aerobatic Shootout several times.

    But why is the Extra 260 so perfect for our kind of IMAC-style flying ? Well, take a closer look at the full size airplane: Wing and stabs are aligned very axial - the secret of every neutral flying plane. They are reasonable streched in wingspan – almost like a modern F3A design. Missing the counterbalances, the elevators perform very well in sequence flying and let the plance track perfectly. Another affinity to pattern planes. And last, but not least, its fuselage side-area is big enough to perform a good knife-edge in every situation, while still keeping a really good aerodynamic shape. Your Extra 260 3m will be a rocket even with an older 150cc engine and have an easy game with strong wind. When your friends are already taking their Yaks apart, you’ll probably laugh about that tiny little breeze.


    So far, so good. Let’s take a closer look at our 260. You know it – when there aren’t exclusive details , realizing new thoughts to make a modelers life easier – than it’s something, but not a CompARF.

        It’s always an issue with the canopies: If you’re making them too small, you need the tools of a dentist to fix the simplest things. If you’re making them too big, the plane will be shaky and noisy, especially with that new 170cc engines. Time for a compromise ! That’s exactly what we were thinking while designing the 260 fuselage.

        We listened to our valued customers all the time and we are always trying to improve things. Regarding the landing gear of our 260, we didn’t make experiments, we just made it solid and strong. You have to do a lot to break that. But even if you do so – ordering the spare parts with our new website was never as easy as it is right now. And then, it takes you exactly three bolts to exchange it. Quite simple, isn’t it?

        As always, all the linkage horns are already glued in when you’re receiving the kit. We’re using high quality phenolic material, which is really hard to get sloppy. All our 3m planes have double horns to use ball-links, like it should be.

        You have the freedom of choice when it comes to the servos. Mounting plates for JR or Futaba servos are included in the kit. While two highest power servos like the JR 8711 or similar are sufficient for each wing, there is also the possibility to use 3 without any modification.

        The elevator doesn’t have any counterbalance, so it will a put a little bit more load at the servos at it usually does. That’s why we recommend the use of 2 highest performance - i.e. JR 8711 - servos for each stab. It’s also possible to use only one, but then you should be really careful to avoid flutter and replace your servo gear when it gets sloppy.

        All twin cylinder engines from 120-170cc will fit under the cowling. A classic 150cc motor like the DA-150 will already provide enough power on canisters for the craziest maneuvers or sequences. A 170 with canisters starts getting insane. If you use a 170 on pipes, it’s not aerobatics anymore – it’s Air-Racing.


    Let's take a closer look at the wings first. Have your ever heard of the "TAVS"-technology, developed by CARF-Models? Well, it stands for "Total Area Vacuum Sandwich" - making the wings so strong and stiff, no wooden or foam-sandwich plane can compete with. A rib and spare structure inside the wing is already prepared for the aluminum spar tube and all the servos. Its made from high quality balsa and plywood, and - where necessary - it is coated with fiberglass or carbon. All hardware to install the aileron servos is included. You'll find phenolic frames for your choice of JR or Futaba servos in the hardware bag. You always should use one servo at the position close to the wing-tips. It's your choice, if you go with only 2 servos per wing or if you want to use 3. In the last case, you can couple 2 servos and mount them to the first rib of the wing. Of course, all phenolic parts shown at the pictures are included.


    The stab's inner structure is made from fiberglass-coated balsawood to keep it lightweight. You have to glue in some plywood-frames to mount the servos. Again, there are frames for JR or Futaba included.

    Fuselage & Engine:

    The fuselage is stiffened with kevlar and carbon fibers where necessary. The engine dome forms one unit with the rest of the fuselage to keep the vibration and noise-level at a minimum. All popular 120-170cc twin-engines fit under the easy-to-remove cowling.

    On all our modern kits, we modified the landing gear mounting. We didn't make experiments, we just made it solid and massive to keep you happy, even if one landing is less than perfect. And if really something happens, the landing gear legs are quite easy to replace. Three screws and that's it - not that bad, isn't it?

    Flying Characteristics:

    What is the most important thing, a good IMAC plane has to be: Right, neutral. So what's the secret about that: There is no secret. Simply care about an axial wing and stab position and about the same fuselage side area above and below the wing axis. That's it. It doesn't take long to recognize, that we did our homework with our Extra 260. You'll need only a very very small amount of coupling during knife edge. A special feature, also the full-scale Extra 260 offers, is the stab without any counterbalances. Well, we don't want to lie, and there are not only advantages. We highly recommend to use 2 highest power digital servos, like i.e. the JR 8711, for each elevator. And please take always a look of parts getting sloppy and if so, replace them.
    The good things are: You'll getting an amazingly clear and strong response to your elevator controls. Use it for the crispiest snaps you ever saw or for the insanest freestyle maneuvers. It's you on the controls, we only care about the right material.

    While still providing enough fuselage side-area for the craziest knife-edge maneuvers, the Extra 260's shape is quite aerodynamic. Even with a classic 150cc Engine on canisters, you have more than enough power to beat the wind. You'll probably laughing about that tiny little breeze, when your friends are already taking their Yaks apart.

    Look at these large, aggressive ailerons ! The Extra 260 is doing amazingly fast rolls. You don't even need ridicously big throws for that, thanks to the well-proven airfoil and the clean surface of a full-composite airframe.

    We haven’t talked about 3D and freestyle maneuvers so far. Well, it’s good to hear that upcoming, super talented pilots like Chris Brislin from Australia are prefering the 260 also for that, flying it to the podium at the Shootout 2008 with an incredible freestyle routine, featuring all the crazy new maneuvers. With its large control surfaces and its incredible power-to-weight ratio (already with older engine designs), the 260 has everything you’ll need for any freestyle maneuvers you can imagine.

    General Information:

    The Gee Bee R2 - No other airplane is more notorious, nor personifies the “Golden Age of Air Racing” like a Gee Bee racer! The mere mentioning of a Gee Bee conjures up nicknames like „killer bee“, „widow maker“ and „flying coffin“… Oh, really? While this Gee Bee is definitely not for the inexperienced, it is easier to fly than you might think.

    The key to success is that, unlike many other Gee Bee models which have come and gone, the CARF Gee Bee R2 is a faithful scale reproduction of the full sized aircraft. Our Gee Bee even has the same air foil - and that is just one of the reasons why it flies so well.

    It has a wide speed range with excellent slow flight characteristics and no bad habits. Like its full scale counterpart, you slow this one down too much and it simply drops its nose until sufficient flying speed is recovered.

    Kit Components:

    When your CARF Gee Bee R2 arrives, you will be amazed at two things: First, its size. Words like ‘voluminous’ and ‘cavernous’ come to mind. Second, the minimal parts count. Besides the revised and updated instruction manual, wood parts and hardware, there are only 8 main pieces: Fuselage, two wing halves, stab/elevators, wheel-pants, engine dome and a pony-keg-sized cowl!

    The fuselage is completely formed while scale rib/fabric “sag” has been molded in, duplicating the original in all the right places. Heat louvers are formed, simulated fastener detail is evident and CARF has even duplicated the “rivet dimpling” one would find on the aluminum structures of the full-size. Carbon fiber matting is added in high stress areas, while all formers and bracing are glued in place and the characteristic red and white scallop scheme gel-coated in the molds!
    You will notice the vertical fin has molded-in “right offset” just like Delmar’s and that the canopy frame is integral to the fiberglass fuselage. This Gee Bee even features a scale working door which will also function as access to the model’s interior once the engine dome is bolted in place.


    The innovative team at ARF has produced an exact scale replica of the famous Gee Bee racer, down to its modified M6 ‘reflex’ airfoil. Indeed, the CARF 93” span R2 is the most accurate rendition of this airplane ever kitted. While many other versions have come and gone, perhaps the venerable CARF offering thrives simply because it holds so true to the original and proves that the empennage, airfoil, span, gear, and length do not have to be altered to produce an authentic flying R2 replica. Until now, achieving a scale Gee Bee airfoil just wasn’t feasible using conventional techniques. The very slender scale airfoil is only possible using CARF’s unique composite stressed skin construction process. Flight surfaces are laminated in the molds, permanently attached by a special nylon hinge cloth sandwiched between the outer skin and the foam. The process produces a gap-free hinge and eliminates lots of work! The revised wing halves now come with aileron servo hatches, flying wire reliefs, and the carbon fiber locating dowels are now pre-installed. Like the rest of the kit, the red and white scallops are gel-coated in the molds. No painting, no wrinkles, no sags!

    Our new and improved Gee Bee now features pre-hinged and clearanced rudder, adding accuracy and speed to the construction process. And while other kit designers have felt compelled to enlarge the Gee Bee’s tail surfaces in search of elusive ‘sport plane handling,’ CARF has taken a more traditional and sound approach, believing that when it comes to this historic racer, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery; thus we have NOT deviated from the original’s planform. Have we been successful? Consider, while most other renditions are now extinct, our Gee Bee is still going strong! We believe Howell ‘Pete’ Miller and the Granvilles knew very well what they were doing – dittos Delmar Benjamin and Steve Wolf. Shouldn’t you?

    Landing Gear:

    The key to successfully landing a Gee Bee racer (besides superb piloting skills), is superb landing gear. That is correct! The best landing approach and touch-down is of no use if the aircraft’s undercarriage conspires against the pilot by flexing, tucking, twisting, bouncing, locking up or is simply in the wrong location!

    After extensive testing, CARF has developed a scale oleo/scissor landing gear system which works with, instead of against, the pilot. The 7” wheels have been engineered specifically for this gear/this airplane. The landing gear operate exactly as the full scale and are strategically located to maximize landing success while adhering to the original’s scale fidelity.

    Balanced properly, the Gee Bee resists nose-overs. The large wheels and oleos absorb less-than-perfect touch-downs and grass runways. And the entire undercarriage is anchored resolutely to the aircraft’s wing and fuselage structure by way of scale flying wires – just like the full size. Why mess with success? After a little practice, you will have your Gee Bee landing like a dream (not a nightmare!) and only you will know the secret. It’s the GEAR!

    Flying Characteristics:

    Like any high performance tail-dragger, the Gee Bee will require some rudder input during its take-off run. If you have flown a large warbird, this should come as no surprise and will be a very similar discipline with the Gee Bee. Throttle up slowly and deliberately, staying ahead of the aircraft; as the tail lifts off, the Gee Bee will achieve flying speed very rapidly and can be rotated immediately. Climb to a safe altitude, turn around, throttle back to approx. 2/3 throttle and trim out the aircraft for hands-off, straight and level flight. This may require several passes as the Gee Bee gobbles up sky very rapidly. This is, after all, a PYLON RACER!

    Once the Gee Bee is properly trimmed, try to relax and enjoy your creation. This is, after all, why you built this thing, right?! When you have achieved a level of comfort with the plane, try some high and low speed passes. Be aware that banking the Gee Bee to the left generally results in a nose-high attitude (at knife edge) due to the right engine thrust and right fin/rudder. Conversely, banking the Gee Bee right will result in a nose-down attitude. Remember, these aircraft were built to do one thing very well – GO FAST AND TURN LEFT. Some compromises must be made in other flight modes.

    When it is time to set up for landing approaches, start at a fairly high altitude just to confirm you can in fact fly the pattern. Once you can establish a reliable approach and fly the Gee Bee directly down the runway, lower your approach speed. The Gee Bee is NOT a sport plane so do not attempt to line it up and chop the throttle. This airplane must be flown onto the runway – this means the throttle is gently pulled back for a shallow sink rate and maintained at a high idle until touch-down is immanent. ONLY at that moment should the engine be brought back to idle. Once the Gee Bee touches down, STAY AHEAD of the rudder.

    DO NOT RELAX. The Gee Bee landing gear provides a very stable landing platform, but rudder input is integral to maintaining directional stability. It is also VERY HELPFUL to apply full up elevator the moment flying speed is lost (generally on touch down) as this will keep the tail planted and reduce the possibility of a nose-over. This is a habit every pilot should adopt any time his airplane is taxiing.

    CONGRATULATIONS!!! Now that your first flight is behind you and you have had a chance to take a bow, change your shorts, shake many hands and answer a million questions, you should go completely over your Gee Bee. Check EVERYTHING! Now….. fuel up again and fly it again! While it is tempting to pack up and depart as a “hero,” having flown the Gee Bee successfully, you will never master this aircraft until you can fly it without those first-flight jitters and land it consistently. Another couple of flights while the handling of the aircraft is fresh in your mind and you still have a level of confidence, will go a long way towards making you real Gee Bee pilot – and not just a guy who flew a Gee Bee.

    CARF P-47 Bubble Top All Silver


    The silver ARF version is currentlx the only Bubble Top version produced. It is still a very high effort to paint this model in the molds - and also not to 100% scale. This is the silver version, which is a perfect base for any scale color scheme, be it a weathered camouflage or a shiny restauration airshow scheme.

    General Information:

    A Giant Scale, All Composite WWII Fighter Without Compromise.

    After introduction of the Razorback version of our P-47 Thunderbolt, we successfully produced and sold an impressive number of highly prefabricated „Razorbacks“. However, the demand for a „Bubble Top“ never silenced. So, we looked at the amount of modifications required to convert the Razorback into a Bubble Top.
    CARF Models has then built all new plugs of fuselage, canopy, canopy frame and dorsal fin, matching the full scale outline 100%. The dorsal fin is a separate part, so that you can produce both the earlier and the later versions of this version of the airplane. Vertical fin, stab, elevator and wings have been take over from the good old Razorback. All internal construction and equipment installation was directly copied into the new Bubble Top.


    The P-47 Thunderbolt "Bubble Top" features the same high prefabrication as it’s Razorback brother.
    Actually, due to the complexity of the aircraft and the experience with our other warbirds (e.g. Corsair) we offer also the Bubble Top version of our  P-47 as an ARF plane only. All parts are composite, with silver surface and panel lines and rivets molded in.
    Basically, all composite parts are prefabricated to the highest possible level. It’s only left for you to install servos and linkages to the already installed control horns, and bolt on your engine. Lets show you through the contents of the ARF version, which will take your breath away.


    Fuselage readily built, wing mounts installed, firewall installed, cowling mounted, and all mounting provisions completed to install the Moki and its equipment. Even an engine dome with the exact mounting position and angles is provided. Rudder Servo mount, fuel tank mount, equipment tray, all is built in or prepared to be bolted on. Canopy frames are also molded in two part molds, reinforced with a 3D-frame, which allows the scale sliding canopy mechanism to be installed (optional). A vacuum formed cockpit kit is also included, which can be additionally detailed and refined up to your desire.

    The wings are the real masterpiece of this P-47. Especially the flap system. Various components of this 100% scale flap hinging system have to be installed even before the mold halves of the wings are joined. The complexity of the system awards with an impressive scale flap mechanism similar to a fowler system, extending wing area and lift as well as drag. Ready to install flap servos. The ailerons are hinged in scale manner, allow partial balancing and due to the hinge line outside the wing surface, the control horn and linkage can be fully hidden, too.


    The tail area of the fuselage is also widely finished. Tail gear mount is glued in, tail gear door is cut out and hinged, stab and fin mounts are installed and aligned. The tail control surfaces are hinged, rudder control horns are glued in and a hidden elevator torsion linkage is built and readily installed. Even the bolts to secure it to the fuselage and to attach the elevators to the torsion linkage are preinstalled.


    The wing is precisely prefabricated to accept a specially designed scale landing gear with no modifications. The gear mount is made from strong aircraft grade plywood and carbon plates, which will even withstand some serious abuse without damaging the internal wing structure. Gear doors are scale in shape and surface, made in two-part molds with structured inner surfaces as well. They are readily hinged and attachment points to the gear are prepared.

    The retracts for the CARF-P-47 are as sophisticated as the whole airplane. They have been designed by Sierra Giant Scale in collaboration with CARF, to fit specifically our plane. The scale strut is not only retracting, it is also compressing during the retraction process so that the full scale length when extended is available, and still the compression during retraction allows the scale strut and wheel bay position in the wing.

    In order to compress the strut all the way, the oleo must be partially an air piston, where pressure is released when the gear is cycled. As a side effect, once the radio is switched off, the plane sinks into the struts just like the real one, where the fading hydraulic pressure made the plane sit low when the engine and hydraulic systems were switched off. A scale gimmick, as extraordinary as the whole plane.

    Against the scale mains, the tail gear seems quite regular and un-exciting. Working flawlessly and reliably. The light weight design keeps the tail light, so that no additional nose weight is required even with a lighter engine.

    Engine Choice:
    The engine of choice is undoubtedly the Moki 250 Radial. For this engine a perfectly matching engine dome is included in the kit. Attachment positions are predrilled, not only for the engine itself, also for the accessories such as ignition, throttle servo and exhaust stacks. The thrust line is set in the motor dome, anticipating that the Moki 250 and the CARF 4 bladed 30” prop is used. For this engine choice a specific equipment tray is included in the kit, which allows to install the equipment further towards the tail of the airplane without requiring balance weight.

    The more economical option would be the use of 100-120 cc flat twin or inline twin engines. There is a huge array of engines available on the market, but we’d recommend the DA-120 and the DA-120R. Both engines will fit and will power this airplane with authority, even though they would not spin the 30” CARF scale 4-blade prop. A different, but also included equipment tray will be used in order to place the equipment as far forward as possible, so that here, too, no additional balance weight is required for the optimum C of G.

    Flying Characteristics:
    Its real qualities, the CARF P-47 Thunderbolt will show in the air. What a powerful and monumental appearance. This airplane represents in the air absolutely like the real thing. It is extremely stable, at the same time versatile and maneouverable. The wide speed range and the absolutely smooth stall characteristics make it a pleasure to fly. The ground handling is very good, too. This is due to the wide gear track and the long fuselage. Even though a tail dragger, it even is very manageable on tarmac runways, too.


    As you will see, it is almost impossible to put more prefabrication and performance into a warbird than we managed to do with our P-47. This is the plane leading the industry standard from now on in regards of design and prefabrication and flying performance. It’s the new flagship of the CARF warbird line, our pride and joy.

    We chose the way of zero compromise. This ARF version is truly ARF and doesn’t leave any guess work to you. However, this does reflect on the price and we hope that we made the right decision by carrying the meaning of “ARF“ all the way to the end.
